Duke Energy has been delivering a lot of bad news to Citrus County lately, but now there is some good news to report.
The Duke Energy Foundation is giving Citrus County's Economic Development Council $444,000 to help put a plan in place to expand and diversify industry.? That includes initiatives aimed at helping businesses grow, bringing in new industry, work force training and more.
"Right now our budget for economic development is like 200 thousand dollars, so you can understand how much impact that will have," EDC Executive Director Don Taylor said.
Another $50,000 will go to the county's Chamber of Commerce to help promote tourism.
Chamber President Josh Wooten said the money can be used to beef up the website, create a good visitor guide and more.
"When I heard, 'We have chosen the Chamber and you are getting $50,000,' I did myself a high-five," Wooten said.
Duke Energy officials say there won't be any waiting around for the money because it should be in the bank ready to go very soon.
The donations are a bit of sunshine during a gloomy time in Citrus County. Duke Energy closed down their nuclear plant in Crystal River and they're having a tax dispute with the county. That has created a huge tax revenue shortfall so county leaders are hoping the money will help create brighter days ahead.
Another blow to Citrus was Duke Energy's announcement that they are not going to build a nuclear plant in Levy County.
Duke Energy officials said they are looking into building a natural gas plant and Citrus leaders are hoping they get it.
